Candidates Assigned

This week, the synod’s assignment committee met to assign graduates to congregations, schools, and mission settings. At the Call Day service on Thursday, May 23, 2019, Professor Sorum’s sermon reminded them that “Jesus sends you!”

Before he began reading the assignments, WELS President Mark Schroeder thanked President Paul Wendland for his 15 years of service as president and said, “What a privilege it’s been serving with you.” President Wendland is stepping down to serve as a full-time professor.

Then candidates, their families, parents, grandparents, and friends learned where they were headed to serve. In all, 33 men were assigned. Of those, 26 were seniors receiving their first call, two were from the class of 2018, four from the class of 2017, and one from the class of. In addition, three were reassigned to one-year calls.

At the same service, 27 middlers were assigned to congregations throughout North America to serve for their vicar year. Both assignment lists are available on our website

The service was streamed live and over 1100 computers logged on from places such as Minnesota, Wisconsin, Virginia, Georgia, California, Colorado, Tennessee, South Carolina, Alaska, Missouri, Texas, Illinois, Arizona, Michigan. One man even logged on from the Atlanta airport. In additions, classrooms joined us from St. Mark’s, Watertown, Wis., Winnebago Lutheran Academy, Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School.
