Filling the Empty Nest
Presenter: Don and Mary Patterson
Jesus told us that he would make our life full. (John 10:10). He didn’t mean just with children. He meant full with grace, faith, love, purposeful friendships, valuable activity and godly pleasure. What does that look like when the children have launched? How can the nest be full when it feels so empty? What strategies work to rekindle the full life we felt when it was just the two us decades ago? What does God lead us to do for each other in the “fall” of our lives?
Don and Mary Patterson have been married 33 years. They live in Georgetown, Texas where Don serves as pastor of Holy Word Lutheran Church in Austin and District President of the South Central District of the WELS. Mary has been a residential realtor for 12 years now. They have reared four sons, one foster son and have three grandsons. Their youngest is a junior in college.
Over the years Don and Mary have spoken about Christian marriage in Sweden, Alaska, California, Connecticut, Texas, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Washington, and Colorado. Both grew up in Garland, Texas about a mile apart from one another. They met in Middle school and started dating two years after high school. Having already passed through the newlywed era, early marriage, rearing young ones, chasing after four active boys in sports, dealing with teen issues and now empty nesting, they offer a wide variety of experiences and insights. All through these years the word of God with its grace and truth have guided the way.
