Chinese Church History
Instructor: Glen Thompson
In 2035, Chinese Christians will celebrate the 1400th anniversary of the arrival of Christian missionaries in the Middle Kingdom. This course will trace the 600-year presence of Syriac-speaking missionaries in China, the work of Jesuit and other Catholic evangelists who followed, and then the efforts of Protestant missionaries during the past 2 centuries. We will conclude with a study of the current indigenous Chinese Christian church including the Chinese Lutheran presence. Special attention will be given to the unique missiological issues Christianity faced in penetrating China’s highly developed millennias-old culture.
