Exegesis of Colossians
Instructor: Paul Zell
It is difficult to get a firm handle on the so-called “Colossian heresy.” It is not difficult at all, however, to be enriched by the epistle with which St. Paul lifts his readers above and beyond any attempt to diminish the person and work of our Lord. Jesus Christ is supreme, Paul announces. He is head over all creation for the benefit of his body, the church. He is sufficient for all our needs in time and eternity. During our course of study we will do a careful reading of the Greek text of Colossians. As a result, precious exegetical skills are refreshed and rich Christology is examined and discussed. If there is a desire a 15-hour course for seminary CE credit, one course objective is that each participant comes away from it with seven thoroughly researched text studies. If there is there is less time available (say, 6-8 hours for a pastors’ conference), participants will undoubtedly be refreshed by Paul’s bold emphasis on the all-sufficient Christ. They will also be well prepared to share the epistle in their Bible classes.
