The Assyrian Period

Instructor: Forrest Bivens

Description:
The focus of this course will be on the men and the messages of those prophets who served during the Old Testament period of Assyrian political and military dominance. The period of the so-called Neo-Assyrian Empire was roughly 750 to 650 BC. Old Testament prophets conveyed God’s messages in connection with this historical landscape, with some anticipating the Lord’s use of Assyrian power, some enduring the brutality of Assyrian strength when the Lord saw fit to allow this, and some address that nation’s downfall. We will review, in overview fashion, the history of the Assyrian Empire, but our primary attention will be on God’s prophets like Isaiah, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, and Zephaniah. The study of these books will be isagogical, with the emphasis on their main emphases and memorable messages in addition to their historical contexts.
