Day 3: Congregation and Ministry Support Group
On Thursday, Mission & Ministry focused on the WELS Congregation and Ministry Support Group. Through its seven areas—Adult Discipleship, Congregational Counseling, Evangelism, Lutheran Schools, Special Ministries, Worship, and Youth and Family—CMSG offers assistance to congregations and schools so they can carry out their ministries faithfully and efficiently.
The day began with headlines from Commission on Congregational Counseling Member Pastor Doug Tomhave, who serves at St. Paul’s, Lake Mills, Wis.
Pastor John Boggs, a teacher at Winnebago Lutheran Academy, then shared his experiences as a pastor in a congregation and a school. Through stories, both serious and humorous, he talked about the widely varied experiences pastors will face and how synodical resources can support their ministries.
Thursday’s breakout sessions covered topics from how congregations can assimilate released prisoners to starting a recovery group, from early childhood ministries to creating small group Bible studies. Others spoke on counseling sexual abuse survivors, youth and family leadership training, planning outreach, using projectors in worship, and reaching “nones” with the gospel.
The three-day conference closed with a worship service led by Pastor Michael Geiger. There he reminded students as they go out with the sword of the Spirit, to also let the sword of the Spirit work in their own hearts and lives first.
