On February 7-9, presenters from around North America and the world spoke to those who attended Mission & Ministry, an annual three-day event that highlights the worldwide work of WELS. Under the theme “Plant the Enduring Word,” 31 presenters from wide-ranging ministries spoke about their work. In addition, 30 WELS organizations set up displays to share their work in God’s kingdom. Each day features a worship service, keynote address, an update from WELS administrators, and small group breakout sessions. Mission & Ministry is organized entirely by seminary seniors.
Day 1: World Missions
On Tuesday, Mission & Ministry focused on World Missions. The face of world mission work is changing, and Paul Prange, administer for WELS ministerial education, discussed the collaboration taking place between world missions, home missions, and ministerial education. As we send out missionaries to places around the world, and as pastors and churches reach out to immigrants in the U.S., the need for coordination continues to grow.
For the keynote address, Pastor Brad Krause, who served as a missionary in Mexico and is now a religion teacher at Fox Valley Lutheran High School, spoke on dealing with mysticism and syncretism in other cultures.
Breakout sessions included lessons from those who have served as missionaries, the transitions to and from missionary life, and communicating the gospel in an oral culture. In addition, students heard about work taking place in Sudan, India, Pakistan, Southeast Asia, Europe, and Mexico.
