Challenges Faced by Post-Reformation Lutheran Church

Instructor: Joel Otto

Description:
In the century after Luther’s death, the Lutheran church faced numerous challenges: wars aimed at destroying Lutheranism, the Catholic Counter-Reformation, internal doctrinal controversies, and the growing influence of Calvinism. This course will look at the effect these challenges had on the Lutheran church during the latter half of the 16th century and the first half of the 17th century and how the Lutheran church responded and reacted. Through the reading of primary sources, students will grow in understanding the challenges faced by our Lutheran forefathers and gain practical pastoral insight for dealing with false doctrine and physical hardships.
