Instructions for Securing an Advisor

Instructions for Securing an Advisor

The WLS director of continuing education serves as an informal advisor for any pastor who is just beginning to take STM courses but who is not sure if he would like to pursue either the full degree program (24 credits) or the certificate program (12 credits in one area).

Once a pastor has determined that he would like to focus on a particular area of study – often discovered after taking several courses and noting what is particularly appealing – he can ask the director of continuing education to assign him a faculty advisor from that area of study. The director of continuing education will work with the pastor to select a professor who teaches in that area of study who would then be asked to serve as his advisor. The director of continuing education forwards that request to the specific professor, and, if that professor agrees to serve in this way, obtains formal approval for the STM advisor at a meeting of the faculty.

Once the director of continuing education informs the pastor that an advisor has been formally approved, he can then begin to work with that advisor to find answers to his questions as he pursues the path to the completion of the STM degree.

For those seeking to pursue the certificate option (12 credits in one area of study), the same procedure is followed as what is outlined above.
