Preaching the Word: Building on a Strong Foundation

Instructor: Jonathan Micheel

Description:
This course, one of the core courses for the Preaching and Worship focus area, aims to refine and expand fundamentals of preaching that, like the foundation of a building, can be overlooked. The course has two main parts. The first part reviews the process of writing and preaching a sermon, with the goal of helping preachers refine their process and share ideas and resources with one another. The second part introduces homiletics as a discipline through directed reading, writing, and discussion. Participants will choose reading related to one of several concepts foundational for preaching the Word: the purpose of preaching (why we preach), the context of preaching (where and to whom we preach), and the person of the preacher (the relationships between God, preacher, and listeners). Additional questions related to preaching may also be discussed as participants desire.
